- 1959 - Nearly 95 years after the conclusion the U.S. Civil War, its last surviving veteran died. He was Walter Williams and had lived to be 117 years old.
- 1972 - Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt returned to earth in Apollo 17 after a record stay of 74 hours, 59 minutes on the Moon's surface. It was the last Apollo mission to land men on the moon.
